Critical update: iOS 18.6.2 released

Apple released vital new updates for iPhone, iPad, and Mac users this morning. These updates, primarily iOS 18.6.2 and iPadOS 18.6.2, address a serious security vulnerability that could allow devices to be taken under control using a simple image file.

According to Apple’s security report, the vulnerability resided in ImageIO, a system that allows devices to process image files. The report states that a specially crafted malicious image file could cause memory corruption on a targeted device. This could open a door for cyberattackers to infiltrate the system.

Apple stated that it is “aware of a report suggesting that this vulnerability may have been used in a highly sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals.” The fact that the vulnerability was discovered directly by Apple, rather than by third-party researchers, is noteworthy.
